THE NEED:

FOCO Café will be opening its doors this summer (2014) to offer the Fort Collins community access to nutritious, quality food regardless of an individual’s ability to pay.  Refurbishing their building requires addition of a ramp to their facility to enable access for disabled individuals.   This addition is necessary but comes with a price, namely $25,000.  Please help me provide funds to them by sponsoring my run from my favorite restaurant, The Blue Moon Café in Silverthorne, CO (http://www.bluemoonbakery.net), to what will become one of my favorite new restaurants in Fort Collins-The FOCO Café.

My goal for the 140 mile run is $13,000 and I plan to begin at 8 AM on July 25, 2014.  My goal is to run the distance in 36 hours.

TO DONATE please go to the coloradoGives website:

My reality:

In October of 2013 I realized first-hand the importance of food and food security; that is, being certain of your ability to feed yourself and those you care for.  As a federal employee I was furloughed and although I knew I would return to my job, and in all probability receive back pay, the situation was very stressful because
1)-I wanted to work but was not allowed;
2 -My research that I had spent months/years planning was going to be put off for at least a year because of seasonal aspects; and
3)-I wasn’t being paid, and as with everyone, the paychecks were dearly needed.

All of this stress manifested as a decrease in appetite, a lack of sleep, and increasing anxiety.  When I tried honoring a friend, who was riding The EOD Undefeated Bike Ride, by running 50 trail miles at the same time he was riding, everything conspired against me and I ended up passing out at a picnic area at mile 35.

 In the big picture I realize I was taken care of in regards to food, shelter, mental and spiritual health.  So if the anxiety of food insecurity (lack of proper eating and associated stresses) and other negative factors can have such an enormous impact on me, imagine what it does to someone who may not have a safety net around them!

GOAL: $13,000
